Drawings- as a follow up to the photos I posted yesterday. These are some early ideas for the Medicine Unboxed chapbook we will be making for MU2014- Frontiers.
The book is a collection of original contributions from people connected to MU2014- medical professionals, poets, writers, academics and artists. I have been tasked with illustrating and designing the book, trying to find a visual language and framework which will bring the varied voices of the contributors together.
The idea I am playing with it the sense of the book being a box full of a disparate array of voices, which are only united by their connection to the medicine Unboxed mission, and specifically the theme of frontiers for 2014. I wanted to explore the possibility of illustrating this idea and have it appear as a three through the book. So that perhaps there will be a narrative of a box which is found and which, like some Alice in Wonderland/Pandora’s box seems to contain an impossible quantity and range of material. I potentially want to take the idea further and explore the importance of putting the human at the centre of this, so in a very simplistic illustrative manner I started playing with the idea of a character investigating the box- touching, opening, trying to climb in, falling in, climbing out and transforming. The box and the book can then become a maze like space, which is more about exploring than finding an entrance and exit, a weblike lattice rather than a straight line (hence the Minotaur).
